  • Cal-Cryo safety training

  • Before booking time

    • See the link “New Users” on the Cal-Cryo website to submit your information. Facility staff will create accounts for you to book sessions, access files, remotely access microscopes, access live processing workstations, and enroll you in the Cal-Cryo email list.
    • Join the Cal-Cryo Slack group
    • Take Cal-Cryo safety training
    • Add Cal-Cryo google calendars to your google account to sign up for time (see “User Guides and Procedures” page.
    • Review microscope procedures (access from “User Guides and Procedures” page)
  • Prior to your session

    • Grid preparation:
      • Users need to bring to their own clipping rings and clips
      • The facility has vitrobot forceps available or you can bring your own.
    • Instrument status:
      • Staff will communicate any major issues prior to your time, but you can check on slack for minor known issues.
  • During your session

    • Session timing:
      • Microscope time slots are 24 hours in duration from 9am-9am. You can start loading your grids as early as 9am on your start day. Plan to finish removing your grids by 9am on your end day (or make a plan with staff or the next user to remove your grids for you).
    • Staff availability:
      • If you have reserved time in advance you can expect at least one staff member to be on campus between 9am-5pm and available to help with microscope issues (unless noted in google calendar).
      • For same day bookings, reach out to staff to make sure someone is available to help.
      • For issues after 5pm, message staff on slack to ask for help. We can try to assist remotely, but cannot promise resolution of issues after hours.
      • Staff can assist with all aspects of screening and data collection setup subject to time availability.
      • If you require extensive training, please coordinate with staff by slack or email prior to your session so they are able to plan for this.
      • Please let staff know as early as possible if you need help setting up data collection and performing alignments. We need to start setting up data collection on your chosen grid by 3pm to ensure things are running smoothly before the end of the day.
    • Live processing and remote access:
      • Setup and check cryosparc live processing and teamviewer access to the microscope prior to 5pm if you would like to take advantage of these tools. Paul is available to help by slack or email if any issues with computer or data access arise.
  • After your session is complete

    • Data is available for a minimum of 30 days after the session completes. We cannot guarantee we will have a backup of your data longer than this. Please contact Paul Tobias if you need other accommodations. Emergency recovery is available with a charge back for the costs to retrieve.
    • See instructions on your Cal-Cryo Access sheet (shared as a google doc) to transfer your data.
    • Please fill out this form Cal-Cryo Microscope Survey to provide feedback on your experience. This is very important so we know what is working well and what is not.
